Canine Care: Essential Oils

A dietary supplement designed to aid maintenance of adequate levels of Omega 3 and Omega 6 essential fatty acids, aiming at promoting optimum health. The oils are powderised to achieve maximum absorption and assimilation by the body, with minimum gastric irritation, whilst at the same time stabilising the oils, improving their keeping properties.

Unsaturated fatty acids are an increasingly recognised important part of a diets. They are required for cell membranes and cell function throughout the body. Inadequate levels can have far reaching consequences on cellular, tissue and organ function contributing to many degenerative disorders. As well as this they are necessary precursors for regulatory hormones, particularly the Prostaglandin’s which play an important role in inflammation, blood clotting and viscosity, and arthritic pain amongst others.

There has been increasing recognition of the potential of these fatty acids in the treatment of skin disease, amongst others, in the Veterinary world. Initially with the launch of Evening Primrose Oil supplements, and more recently Borage Oil. Both of which are contained in this supplement.

Not only is it important to have enough of these oils, but the balance has to right as well. The body cannot make these “essential” fatty acids for itself. Modern diets have shown a shift towards high levels of Omega 6, yet Omega 3 is now recognised as an essential nutrient. The balance of oils has been achieved in the Canine Care Essential Oils by a mixture of Cod Liver Oil, Evening Primrose Oil and Starflower (Borage) Oil. This gives the optimum ratio of 1:1 on which the body is constructed. In severe disease states it may be necessary to first increase the intake of Omega 3 to redress the balance. One way in dogs is to grind one or two teaspoons of fresh organic flaxseeds (linseeds) and add them to the dog’s food just before serving. This may be necessary for one or two months in addition to the Canine Care Essential Oils to correct possible imbalances, but do take the advice of your holistic Vet as to individual cases.

It is not enough just to supplement essential fatty acids if they are to be useful as a source of prostaglandin. It is necessary also to give various minerals and vitamins, such as Zinc, Magnesium, Vitamins B6 and C in the diet. This can be achieved by giving a good multivitamin/mineral supplement such as the Canine Care Multivitamin & Mineral Formula.

Kelp, Spirulina and Chlorella are added to the Oil formulation to help the immune system, detoxify the Liver, Blood and Bowels from chemicals and heavy metals, and also provide a natural source of Iodine and essential amino acids.
